Mustang Sally

May 30th, 2009

If you remember the chapter on “Cars” in Scruffy The Legend, you will recall Karen’s ‘66 Mustang that we were going to “pimp.” In 1982, (picture below), it still looked and ran well. By 2007, it had become a rusted mess. It meant so much to Karen, that rather than junk it, I decided to completely re do it as a present to her. Today, after 2 years of work, it is almost finished. It boasts a totally new paint job, new interior, new V8 small block motor and drive train. Just about every part is new, so it really has no value as a restored classic car. The picture gives you some idea of how it will look, but the Cobra-style external exhaust pipes running along the bottom of the door were not in place for the photo. They add quite a lot to the appearance, and I expect, to the sound. You will see and hear this car coming!

Canine Citizenship Test

May 20th, 2009

Our cousins Leo and Jade from Japan took a canine citizen test, so we took the same test.  Here are all our answers:

Test 1: Accepting a friendly stranger

Leo: If they are nice to me and give me some time to play with, I will think about accepting them. Oh, do they have any treats for me?

Jade: Well, I don’t mind them as long as they play with me.

Charlie: Only after making them think I am about to bite them

Ruby: Immediately with tail wagging

Test 2: Sitting politely for petting

Leo and Jade: Do we know the person who wants to pet us? Before they pet us, please wash your hands.

Because we are afraid of swine flu! And some cookies for us, thank you very much!

Charlie: Only if Darryl says its OK

Ruby: I immediately roll on my back

Test 3: Appearance and grooming

We usually look great! We might be small to Keeshond standard breed, but we are healthy.

Charlie:  I don’t like being brushed.

Ruby:  I can never get enough brushing – my parents waste so much time brushing that silly Keeshond they have no time for me

Test 4: Out for a walk (walking on a loose lead)

Leo: Guilty, I pull!

Jade: When I am alone with mom, I can

Charlie: I pull but I am the leader on walks.

Ruby: I bring up the rear and only occasionally sprint up ahead to see what Charlie is doing

Test 5: Walking through a crowd

Leo and Jade: We don’t know. Mom does not like going through a crowd. We never tried.

Ruby and Charlie:  Darryl considers even one person to be a crowd and steers clear.

Test 6: Sit and down on command and Staying in place

Leo and Jade: We can do those tricks!

Staying in place? As long as mom holds her camera, we do not move, and sit still.

Ruby and Charlie:  We are good at this.

Test 7: Coming when called

Leo and Jade: At home, mom does not have to, because we are always following her around.

We usually hung around her foot.

Charlie: I never leave Darryl’s foot or lap if at all possible.

Ruby:  I am usually too comfortably resting on the sofa.  I come immediately for treats.  Sometimes Darryl jiggles the treat jar to get me to get up to go outside.  I never catch on.

Test 8: Reaction to another dog

Leo: I have many things to say to dogs I meet. I want to tell them about our breed, history, everything I know. I am just introducing myself.

Jade: I am ok with them. As long as I am having fun, I do not care.

Charlie:  I like meeting other dogs.

Ruby: I do too but I have to let them know I’m a Beagle by baying loudly the whole time.

Test 9: Reaction to distraction

Leo: Sorry, I don’t need any distractions.

Jade: No big sounds for me, thank you! If I see plastic bags on a street, I get scared.

I hate that ugly sounds.

People should not throw away plastic bags on streets. They need to take Human good citizen test.

Charlie:  No big deal

Ruby: Any noise like a train or loud truck and I’m outta here.

Test 10: Supervised separation

Leo: I get panicked if I don’t see mom around. I will bark until mom gets back.

Jade: So do I !!.

Ruby and Charlie:  We are much better at this now.  We have our doubts, but we think that most likely, our parents will return if we just can hold out long enough.

More Scruffy Pictures

May 12th, 2009

We found even more pictures of Scruffy and uploaded them all.  If there was a way I would have put them all in Scruffy the Legend and all would have been in color. Maybe next edition (if there should ever be the demand).  You can view them here on Picasa Google.

Dash Has Made It!!

May 5th, 2009

If you will scroll down a few posts you will see the story of Dash, a Keeshond in need of help.  I have the best news to post here now:  Dash has been permanently adopted.  His new name is Beau.  There is no better feeling than to see an unwanted dog with no future, to have been given a very bright future, out of the goodness of some very special people’s hearts.

Bailey the Beagle

Looking to smooch a pooch? Adorable Bailey the Beagle needs a home.

From the website: http://www.baristanet.com/2009/05/love_these_kittens_give_em_a_h.php

Mary M. writes:

I’m trying to help my friend find a home for the sweetest dog in the world, a male beagle, 7 1/2 years old, who needs a loving home. He’s been living in an apartment for the last 5 years so he’s used to being home and quiet during the day. I would take him myself but one of my two cats is not dog friendly at all (we tried).

Bailey’s owner is moving to an apartment in Montclair, NJ that doesn’t accept pets. Bailey is quiet and gentle. He’s never howled in his entire life.

If you can take Bailey home, contact Mary here: mmcgee@mapfre.com.
