Things that go bump in the day

July 28th, 2010

Recently I posted about a plastic owl that seemed to scare Ruby, maybe becasue of its realistic eyes. A few days ago, while in the back yard, Ruby showed the same behavior – abruptly halting and then hesitantly sniffing from a distance. This time it was a part of a plant that had fallen to the ground. It was the general size and shape of a jalepino pepper, but plumper and lighter in color. Looking at it, I tried to figure out what could be scary about it. Then I realized that it could be mistaken for a large green bug. Is Ruby that smart that she is afraid of big bugs the same way I am? My fear is based on the fear of accidentally squashing one as I go to swipe it off my body. I would expect this type of unfounded, almost superstitious fear to occur in the more intelligent primates such as apes, but not dogs. Of course I am not sure Ruby thought it was a bug.

Charlie continues to amaze

July 14th, 2010

I am going to walk the dogs. Ruby is upstairs in her chambers, asleep. Charlie is downstairs near me. I put his walking collar on him and call Ruby. After 10 or so calls, the queen descends the stairs. She sees the collars and comes to my feet. She slowly wiggles her nose through the collar, basically putting it on herself. I heap a lot of praise on her for this, telling her how smart she is over and over. Charlie, now on the other side of the room, suddenly runs towards me, takes a flying leap, lands on the floor in front of me, ending up with his front paws inside my sneakers that were lying there. He is looking up wagging his tail. Tell me he is not saying: “You think Ruby is smart, can she do this? Huh? Huh?”

Keeshond in PA for adoption

July 12th, 2010

2010071012594312f

This guy really caught my eye. He looks to be a larger Keeshond, maybe larger than Scruffy was. He also seems to have some of Scruffy’s behavior problems. But if you really love dogs and live anywhere near PA, maybe?

Yoda is a 3 year old, up to date on vaccines, neutered male Keeshond living in Pittsburgh, PA, who is losing his home due to a divorce. One of our Keeshond rescuers evaluated Yoda and here is what she found: ‘Yoda is a very friendly guy who needs someone to work with him to give him limits and rules. (No, it is not acceptable to pull. No, it is not acceptable to rush other dogs. No, it is not acceptable to be in an excited state unchecked.) Due to his size and excitability, I would not recommend a household with small children under age 8. He would benefit tremendously from training and socialization. (He has only had minimal PetSmart sessions.) A family with patience and ability to recognize when his excitement starts, nipping it in the bud, would be a lucky family to have Yoda as a member. ‘ Reference checks and a home visit is required for Yoda’s adoption. An application to adopt Yoda is available by emailing keeshondrescuepa@aol.com.

In rememberance of Scruffy

Scruffy died 3 years ago on July 4th. We will always miss him. He was so very special. He loved the snow and cold weather. We are in the midst of a heat wave now; this picture makes me feel much more comfortable.
