With your
help, I raised $3,999 !!!!! Thank you very much for your generous
support of my walk.
Day 1 dawned grey and drizzly, but the enthusiasm of the
walkers was not dampened. We started the walk at 7:00 am at South Street
Seaport. We crossed lower Manhattan, passing Ground Zero to the West
Side promenade. We walked all the way to Fort Tyron Park, the half way
point (13.1 miles). We walked south, walking through the campus of
Columbia University, and continuing past Central Park west. We turned
east at the end of the park and walked to 2nd avenue. We turned north
again and headed to Randall's lsland (under the Triboro Bridge). Day one
completed !!!!
Day 2 was beautiful. We left Randall's Island at 7:45. Within an hour we
had removed our sweatshirts and were enjoying the warm weather. We
traveled down First Avenue to Chinatown, then west over the Manhattan
Bridge. We walked through Dumbo to the a park under the Brooklyn Bridge
where we enjoyed lunch. We then walked through a little bit of Brooklyn
and finally made our way over the Brooklyn Bridge and to South Street
Seaport. There was a huge crowd waiting to greet the walkers at the
finish line.
The crew members who manned the rest stops and the people cheering along
the route really helped lessen the aches and pains. They cheered for
every walker who went past. It was really moving to see the names of
loved ones printed on the walkers shirts. Some had photos of a mother or
friend who had died of breast cancer.
